Unlike production processes, business processes are often impossible to actually see and therefore, more difficult to improve. Business Process Kaizen teams, which include your colleagues responsible for the process, first “walk” the process and create a “spaghetti” map, which helps the team quickly identify and eliminate the most obvious waste.
Then the team creates a detailed process flow map, often filling the walls with notes outlining every activity involved in the process. At this point we can identify and remove more subtle waste, such as loop backs, unnecessary steps and decision-delay points. Critical process data, such as quality, product and daily volume information, is also collected and used to drive further improvement.
